I am a bit late getting this one out, apologies. June has flown by with the longest day now in the rear view mirror, still plenty of summer sun to come though (fingers crossed!)
Recap
Whitby Museum, Library & Archive Pop-up
Thanks to everyone who came along to the Whitby Museum Library and Archive Pop-up Exhibition. I was worried that nobody would have the time, so it was wonderful to see the value that people got from viewing the material brought along by Claire. She was very impressed by the level of knowledge people had, and the fact that so many took the time to sit down and study the books and images. We hope that they will be able to come along again for those who might be interested.
The First ‘Ugthorpe Social’
Thank you to the UVCF for supporting this event, Amy Farmer for baking a delicious Lemon Drizzle Cake, and Julie Kenny for making such an array of biscuits and other treats. There was no agenda as it was just supposed to be an opportunity for people to meet and chat. It was great to see so many people talking about books and sharing their interests over tea and cake. We will be holding another one on the 4th of July.
Cuppa & Crafts
The June event raised a fantastic £277.10!
What’s Next?
St Anne’s Church Hall
The church hall will be closed for 3 weeks from 16th June whilst upgrades are made to the toilet facilities and other improvements are undertaken. My understanding is that new wheelchair accessible facilities are being added as well as changes to the configuration of cubicles to make the space more user-friendly.
Pub Quiz
27th June 8:00 pm
We have the regular quiz taking place on Friday 27th June at 8:00 pm. The quiz has raised £399 for St Catherine’s Hospice so far this year. Thank you all for your generosity and sense of humour when supporting it! Mike has done a wonderful job of ensuring a great balance to the questions, so whether you are younger or have been storing knowledge for a few more years than most, you will find it just challenging enough to be of interest! As always, there will be a raffle, so if you would like to support the cause but cannot make the night, raffle prizes are always welcome.
Because we have fewer tables in the snug, now we have the Shuffleboard Table, space was a little tighter last month. If you are coming along with a good sized team, do try to get in early. We will put more tables out where possible this month.
Ugthorpe Social
4th July 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
We are having the next one a little bit earlier than the full calendar month on. There will again be cake and coffee, although no accompanying museum exhibition this time.
Genuine Victorian Magic Lantern Show at The Black Bull
4th July 6:30 pm
Come and experience the home streaming service of the 19th century!

I love looking at old pictures, particularly those made with the vintage ‘view’ cameras, where the negative is the size of a piece of A4 paper. No doubt you will have seen those made by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe that give such a 3-dimensional look to a 2-dimensional image. When speaking to a customer at the start of the year, he mentioned collecting old photographs and having a working Victorian Magic Lantern, and I had no idea what he was referring to. I still have no idea really, but I am sure it will be interesting to experience the magic that audiences might have felt when seeing one in operation in the 1800’s. With that in mind, we have a talk, an exhibition, and a demonstration on the evening of 4th July at 6:30 pm.
Tickets are limited to 30 places, with the full ticket price going towards supporting St Catherine’s Hospice. Tickets can be purchased directly at The Black Bull, so no commission is payable to Eventbrite or directly through Eventbrite on the link below. Please share if you know people who may be interested!
Cuppa & Crafts
5th July 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Just Giving
John Gallon’s daughter, Lynette Chivers nee Gallon, lives in Australia with her family and has run a boarding kennel alongside her husband and children for several years. Unfortunately, her husband has recently become very ill, and they are having to sell the business, so far without luck. In order to try and help them out, John Gallon has asked me to share the Just Giving Page he has set up. the aim is to raise some money to help them out with their car. Living in the UK it is hard to imagine the distances they need to travel so that her husband can get treatment, and the wear and tear this puts on the transport. If you would like to donate or perhaps know people who might know Lynette, please share.
Just one more thing..
Summer and the longer days go by very quickly, so if you have half of an idea about putting on an event and want to ask about potential support, just get in touch! The UVCF has funds that the village has raised, so let’s use them! Maybe an outdoor cinema would be an option or putting on a fete or some sort of village bake off!
